How to start DOWN training w/o treats
When we start to teach a dog to “DOWN” on command we do not use treats. We focus all of our training on a release of pressure.
We will use the same release of pressure methods in all of the training exercises we do with dogs that come to us.
In teaching a dog to respond to pressure and comply to commands without bribing / rewarding them with treats you set yourself up to have a more solid command in the future.
Not many people want to take a treat bag with them everywhere they go, but many dogs trained with treats do not follow commands without treats readily available. In teaching your dog to respond to commands with out treats you are setting up training so that you can ask your dog to follow commands without having to be carrying around treats everywhere you go.
With our pressure on / pressure off training it also sets the dogs up to understand remote collar training in the future which also follows this method with pressure on / pressure off.
